epa02158977 Participants to a human hold hands to encircle the 13-kilometer-long Marine Corps Air Station ( MCAS ) Futenma in Ginowan on Japan ' s southern island of Okinawa , 16 May 2010 . According to the organizers , some 30 , 000 people took part in the event . The participants hope to use the event to rise attention on their opposition to Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama ' s plan to relocate MCAS Futenma within Okinawa Prefecture . The situation on the US Marine base move is still uncertainmany residents of both Okinawa are against the key concepts of the new base relocation plan . Local media also reported that U . S .
