Imf To Start Talks Wıth Turkey May 17 Says Treasury

A team from the International Monetary Fund will start official talks in Ankara May 17, the Turkish Treasury said in a written statement Wednesday.


The IMF was scheduled to visit Turkey in May to conduct a regular assessment of the country's economy under the fund's Article IV agreement, which lists the economicfinancial requirements member states must meet.

"Under the Article IV review, latest economic developments, the middle-termlong-term outlook of Turkish economystructural reform studies will be evaluated," the statement said.

The IMF team will be headed by Turkey Desk Chief Rachel Van Elkan, the statement said.

The IMF team will visit private-sectornon-governmental organizations in Istanbul before its official visit in Ankara, according to the statement.

Turkey's Economy Minister Ali Babacan said in March that the country doesn't need an IMF standby dealthat the government has dropped it from the agenda.

Babacan also said in earlier talks that Turkeythe IMF couldn't reach an agreement on some issues such as the country's 2010 expenditure.

Turkey had been in talks with the IMF for a new standby loan since a previous $10 billion loan agreement expired in May 2008.
