epa02181178 German President Horst Koehler (R)?and his wife Eva Luise (L)?deliver a press conference in Bellevue Palace of Berlin, Germany, 31 May 2010Koehler announced his resignation over controversial comments he made about Germany?s military role in Afghanistan. Koehler had suggested during a recent trip to Afghanistan that the German military was active in the region to defend economic interests. This is the first time in German postwar history that a president has resigned.
