According to the project ' s technical consultant , Mohammed Ghoneim , the museum is due to house some 100 , 000 artifacts . Tens of thousands of artifacts are currently locked away unseen to the public , in the old museum because of the lack of space to display them properly . The Grand Museum of Egypt will thus replace the 100 years-old building visited by millions annually in Cairo ' s downtown . The plans for it were first made in 2002it will be able to display more than twice as many artifacts as its predecessor . It will be located at the foot of the Giza pyramidsthe first two phases of the 600 million dollars project were inaugurated on 14 June by Egyptian First Lady Suzanne Mubarak . EPA/KHALED EL FIQI
