According to the project's technical consultant, Mohammed Ghoneim, the museum is due to house some 100,000 artifacts. Tens of thousands of artifacts are currently locked away unseen to the public, in the old museum because of the lack of space to display them properly. The Grand Museum of Egypt will thus replace the 100 years-old building visited by millions annually in Cairo's downtown. The plans for it were first made in 2002it will be able to display more than twice as many artifacts as its predecessor.
