The Palio di Siena is a horse race held twice each year on July 2August 16 in Siena , Italy , in which ten horsesriders , barebackdressed in the appropriate colours , represent ten of the seventeen Contrade , or city wards .  The seven Contradas that will race because they did not take part in the previous Palio of July 2009 ( above L-R ) Giraffa ( Giraffe ) , Torre ( Tower ) , Leocorno ( Unicorn ) , Nicchio ( Shell ) , Bruco ( Caterpillar ) , ( below L-R ) Selva ( Forest ) Aquila ( Eagle ) the three that were chosen by drawing lots on 30 May 2010 ( below , from C , L-R ) Onda ( Wave ) , Istrice ( Porcupine ) DrAgo ( Dragon ) . The three Contradas added are chosen by drawing lots yearly the last Sunday of May this year 30 May 2010 . The ' Carroccio ' , symbol of communal liberty , closes the historical procession ahead of each Palio horse race carrying the ' Drappellone ' or ' Cencio ' , the painted silk flag , the true Palio which is given as a trophy to the winner Contrada .  EPA/ALIGHIERO PALAZZO   .
