The oil rose (rosa damascena) had been brought to Bulgaria in the 16th century from Turkey. It requires unique climate conditions which in Bulgaria exist only in the 60 km long valley south of the Balkan mountain. The rose flowers are picked by hand before sunriseshort after for achieving the highest concentration of the oil. Bulgaria is one of the main producers of rose oil in the world, along with Turkey. One kilogram of rose oil sells on the world market at prices between 4,0005,000 euros (5,300 - 6,700 US dollars). Rose oil is used in aromatherapyto make perfume.  EPA/VASSIL DONEV
