A deadly mosquito-born disease kills nearly 1 million lives per year worldwide, 80 per cent of which occur in sub-Saharan Africa. According to a report by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), an African child dies of malaria every 30 secondsit causes an annual loss of 12 billion US dollars (8.9 billion euro), which is 1.3 per cent of the continent's gross domestic product.
